Chevron Leaf Tobacco targets bigger market share

Jul 16, 2023 | Updates

SINCE its establishment in 2020, Chevron Tobacco Company has made a mark as one of Zimbabwe’s leading tobacco exporters with an export product portfolio that is above 90 percent cut rag.

The local-based global tobacco supplier was awarded the most Improved Exporter of the Year Award at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Mashonaland Region and scooped the Exporter of the Award in the Tobacco Sector at ZNCC National Awards.

Chevron Tobacco managing director Mike Bingo recently shared with us the reasons behind the company’s phenomenal success.

Below are excerpts of the interview:

1. Can you briefly tell us about Chevron Tobacco?

Chevron Tobacco Company is a Zimbabwean-owned tobacco merchant licensed with the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board as a class A buyer and contract buyer. The company started its operations in 2020 and since then it has been growing its business which is driven by its exports to various destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Far East Asia and Africa.

Our export product portfolio is above 90 percent cut rag which is in line with the government tobacco value chain transformation plan which seeks to increase the level of value addition and beneficiation of tobacco into cut rag and cigarettes.

Chevron has distinguished itself by having a strong global market understanding which has characterised the company as customer centric. Operational efficiency and financial prudence have been fundamental in guiding our internal processes. Our business is defined along the tobacco value chain with key operations in contract farming, leaf purchase, value addition and logistics.

2. Chevron Tobacco clinched the Most Improved Exporter of the Year Award at the ZNCC Mashonaland Region and scooped the Exporter of the Year Award in the Tobacco Sector at ZNCC National Awards. What do these awards mean to you?

The awards are recognition of the significant progress that has been made in terms of export performance by the company. It is a positive indication of our business’s efforts and accomplishments in enhancing export capabilities which can lead to increased credibility, new opportunities and potential growth in future

3. What has been the secret to this success?

The secret to our success is all defined in team work with shared values. This is all driven by effective leadership which has managed to set a clear vision, foster a positive work culture and make informed decisions to drive the company towards its goals. In all this, the organisation has characterised itself as customer-centric where we have the customer at the centre of all operations.

Built strong corporate culture which has helped in attracting, retaining employees and more important creating an environment that encourages creativity, productivity and employee satisfaction. We have a total commitment to continuously evaluate and improve our processes, products and services and as such the company invests heavily in R & D in order to develop new products that meet global standards and customer specifications.

Through our customer relation management (CRM) we collect feedback from our clients and improve in areas where we fall short and enhance areas of success. Since the formation of the company, we have been quick to adapt to changes in the market and industry and as such we have been able to meet our corporate goals without being greatly short changed by a turbulent macro-economic environment.

We have a proper financial management system which prioritises profitability, maintains healthy cash flow and makes investments wisely. As a company we have taken all these elements and viewed them holistically and therefore it has helped the company in its success.

4. Where do you see Chevron Tobacco in the next ten years?

Chevron Tobacco will be Zimbabwean preferred supplier of fine and superior cigarette blends to the global market. This will be done through cut rag supply, cigarette manufacturing and sales. The company will be more integrated in manufacturing and production.

This award is a dedication to all our shareholders, management and staff who supported us to attain this overwhelming success. We are an export-oriented tobacco company specialising in the processing of unique tobacco blends for various customers across the tobacco world market.
